Don Vitone Vito Genovese was a prominent figure in the American Mafia who rose to lead what became the Genovese crime family, one of the five New York families, after decades of involvement in bootlegging, murder, and narcotics trafficking. He fled to Italy in 1937 to avoid a murder charge, returning to the United States after World War II and orchestrating the murder of Umberto Anastasia in 1957 in an unsuccessful bid to consolidate power as boss of all bosses. He was convicted of drug trafficking in 1959 and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, dying at the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Missouri in February 1969.
