Valentín Gómez Farías Valentín Gómez Farías was a pioneering liberal politician who served multiple times as acting President of Mexico in the 1830s and 1840s. He initiated Mexico's first major reform movement, attempting to reduce the power of the Catholic Church and the military — radical ideas that would eventually be realized by Benito Juárez in the Reforma.

José María Valentín Gómez Farías was a Mexican physician and liberal politician who became president of Mexico twice, first from 1833 to 1834, during the period of the First Mexican Republic, and again from 1846 to 1847, during the Mexican–American War.
