U2 U2 are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 1976, comprising vocalist Bono, guitarist the Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr., who became one of the most commercially successful and socially prominent rock acts of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Landmark albums such as "The Joshua Tree" (1987) and "Achtung Baby" (1991) defined the sound of a generation, and the band's theatrical arena tours—particularly the Zoo TV and 360° tours—redefined what live rock concerts could be. Bono's humanitarian advocacy on issues including debt relief and AIDS in Africa has made U2 one of the most politically visible bands in history.
