# The Unabomber

Ted Kaczynski was a former mathematics prodigy and Harvard-educated academic who conducted a mail bombing campaign against universities, airlines, and technology targets from 1978 to 1995, killing three people and injuring 23 others, earning the FBI designation "Unabomber." He lived as a recluse in a rural Montana cabin while writing a 35,000-word anti-technology manifesto, which the Washington Post published in 1995 at his demand; this led to his identification by his brother David. He pleaded guilty in 1998 to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole, dying in his cell in June 2023.
