Stanley Kubrick Stanley Kubrick was a uniquely obsessive and visionary filmmaker whose meticulously crafted, genre-defying films constitute one of the most influential bodies of work in cinema history. Born in the Bronx, New York, he began his career as a photographer for Look magazine before making his first features, and went on to produce a string of masterworks spanning science fiction, horror, war, and period drama — including '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968), 'A Clockwork Orange' (1971), 'The Shining' (1980), and 'Full Metal Jacket' (1987). He worked in deliberate self-imposed exile in England from the early 1960s until his death, seeking total control over every aspect of production.
