# Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz

Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz was a 17th-century nun, poet, and intellectual of New Spain, widely regarded as the first great literary figure of the Americas and a proto-feminist centuries ahead of her time. Her extensive body of poetry, plays, and philosophical prose — including the autobiographical Respuesta a Sor Filotea — defended women's right to education and intellectual life against the strictures of colonial Church authority. She remains a towering symbol of Mexican cultural identity and female intellectual courage.
