Momo Sam Giancana was the boss of the Chicago Outfit from 1957 to 1966, overseeing a criminal empire that spanned gambling, labor racketeering, and extortion across the Midwest and into Las Vegas. He became entangled with the CIA during the early 1960s in alleged plots to assassinate Cuban leader Fidel Castro, and maintained associations with prominent figures in entertainment and politics. He was shot and killed in the basement of his Oak Park, Illinois, home in June 1975, the night before he was scheduled to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee; his murder has never been officially solved.
