Saddam Hussein Saddam Hussein ruled Iraq as its authoritarian president from 1979 until the U.S.-led invasion of 2003, during which time his government was responsible for the systematic persecution of Kurdish and Shia populations, the use of chemical weapons against civilians in the 1988 Anfal campaign, and the invasion of Kuwait in 1990. He was captured by U.S. forces in December 2003 hiding in a farmhouse near Tikrit and was tried by the Iraqi Special Tribunal for crimes against humanity. He was convicted of the massacre of 148 Shia villagers in Dujail and executed by hanging on December 30, 2006.
Overview
Saddam Hussein was an Iraqi politician and revolutionary who served as the president of Iraq from 1979 until his overthrow in 2003 during the United States-led invasion of Iraq. He previously served as the vice president from 1968 to 1979 and also as the prime minister from 1979 to 1991 and later from 1994 to 2003. A leading member of the Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, he was a proponent of Ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and Arab socialism. The policies and ideologies he championed are collectively known as Saddamism, a right-wing variant of Ba'athism.
