Rosario Castellanos Rosario Castellanos was a pioneering Mexican poet, novelist, and feminist essayist who gave literary voice to the marginalized lives of indigenous women in Chiapas. Her novels Balún Canán (1957) and Oficio de tinieblas (1962), along with her poetry and sharp social essays, challenged patriarchal and colonial structures in Mexican society. She also served as Mexico's ambassador to Israel, where she died in an accident in Tel Aviv.
