Queen Victoria Queen Victoria was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837 until her death in 1901, and Empress of India from 1876, making her the longest-reigning British monarch until her great-great-granddaughter Elizabeth II surpassed her record in 2015. Her reign—the Victorian era—was a period of industrial, cultural, political, and military transformation, with significant expansion of the British Empire. Through her nine children's marriages into royal families across Europe, she became known as the "Grandmother of Europe."
