Porfirio Díaz Porfirio Díaz ruled Mexico for 35 years (1876–1911) in a period known as the Porfiriato. He modernized the country's railroads, industry, and infrastructure while brutally suppressing political opposition. The enormous inequalities he created ignited the Mexican Revolution. He died in exile in Paris in 1915.
Overview
José de la Cruz Porfirio Díaz Mori was a Mexican general and politician of Spanish and Mixtec descent who was the dictator of Mexico from 1876 until his overthrow in 1911. Seizing power in a military coup, he served as president of Mexico on three occasions, a total of over thirty years, the longest of any Mexican ruler. This period is known as the Porfiriato and has been called a de facto dictatorship.
