# Osama bin Laden

Osama bin Laden was the founder and leader of al-Qaeda, the militant Islamist organization responsible for numerous terrorist attacks around the world, most notably the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, which killed approximately 3,000 people and triggered the U.S.-led War on Terror. Born into a wealthy Saudi family, he radicalized during the Soviet-Afghan War and subsequently built al-Qaeda into a transnational terrorist network. He evaded capture for nearly a decade following September 11 before being killed by U.S. Navy SEALs during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.
