Osama bin Laden Osama bin Laden was the founder and leader of al-Qaeda, the militant Islamist organization responsible for numerous terrorist attacks around the world, most notably the September 11, 2001, attacks on the United States, which killed approximately 3,000 people and triggered the U.S.-led War on Terror. Born into a wealthy Saudi family, he radicalized during the Soviet-Afghan War and subsequently built al-Qaeda into a transnational terrorist network. He evaded capture for nearly a decade following September 11 before being killed by U.S. Navy SEALs during a raid on his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on May 2, 2011.

Osama bin Mohammed bin Awad bin Laden was the founder and first general emir of the al-Qaeda militant organization. A pan-Islamist and Islamic extremist, bin Laden organized and funded numerous jihadist or anti-Western militants and terrorist attacks worldwide. Al-Qaeda's September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11) against the United States killed 2,977 victims.
