# Octavio Paz

Octavio Paz was Mexico's most celebrated poet and essayist, awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1990 for writings marked by "sensuous intelligence and humanistic integrity." His landmark essay The Labyrinth of Solitude (1950) remains the defining psychological portrait of Mexican national identity. He also served as Mexico's ambassador to India and was a leading voice of 20th-century Latin American intellectual life.
