# Miguel Hidalgo

Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla is the founding father of Mexico. On September 16, 1810, he rang the bell of his church in Dolores and delivered the "Grito de Independencia," launching Mexico's War of Independence against Spain. A Catholic priest and Criollo intellectual, he led a mass uprising of indigenous and mestizo people before being captured and executed by firing squad in 1811.
