Metallica Metallica are an American heavy metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield, who went on to become the best-selling heavy metal band of all time, with over 125 million records sold worldwide. Their 1991 self-titled "Black Album" is one of the best-selling albums in American history with more than 16 million copies sold in the U.S. alone, and their catalog spanning albums like "Master of Puppets" and "…And Justice for All" helped define and popularize thrash metal globally. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
