# Max Weber

Max Weber was a German sociologist, historian, and political economist whose foundational works established modern sociology as a discipline. His Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism (1905) argued that Calvinist religious ethics helped produce the rational, disciplined behavior underlying capitalist accumulation. Weber also developed key concepts including ideal types, the rationalization of modern life, the three types of legitimate authority, and the definition of the state as a monopoly on legitimate violence.
