Mark Twain Mark Twain was an American writer, humorist, and lecturer whose novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) are celebrated as landmarks of American literature. William Faulkner called Huckleberry Finn "the first truly American novel," and Twain is widely considered the father of American literature for his authentic use of vernacular speech and his biting social satire. His writings covered subjects ranging from the antebellum South to political corruption to travel, and he remains one of the most quoted Americans in history.
