Mahatma Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi was an Indian lawyer, anti-colonial nationalist, and political ethicist who led India to independence from British rule through nonviolent civil disobedience, inspiring civil rights movements worldwide. His philosophy of Satyagraha (nonviolent resistance) proved instrumental in campaigns such as the 1930 Salt March and the Quit India movement of 1942. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by a Hindu nationalist who opposed his inclusive vision for an independent India.
