Louis Pasteur Louis Pasteur was a French chemist and microbiologist who is renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination, microbial fermentation, and pasteurization—the process of treating milk and wine to stop bacterial contamination, named after him. His germ theory of disease, which proposed that microorganisms were the cause of many diseases, became one of the cornerstones of modern medicine. He developed vaccines for chicken cholera, anthrax, and rabies, saving countless lives.
