Louis Armstrong Louis Armstrong was an American trumpeter and singer from New Orleans who is one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz, credited with elevating the soloist's role in jazz and establishing improvisation as a core element of the genre through his virtuosic and swinging trumpet playing. Nicknamed "Satchmo" and "Pops," he achieved enormous popular success with recordings such as "What a Wonderful World" (1967) and "Hello, Dolly!" (1964), the latter of which displaced The Beatles from the top of the U.S. charts. He is considered a founding father of American music.
