Lila Downs Lila Downs is a Mexican-American singer and activist born in Tlaxiaco, Oaxaca, celebrated for her work preserving and reinterpreting the indigenous musical traditions of Mexico alongside boleros, jazz, and blues. Of mixed Mixtec and Scottish-American heritage, she sings in multiple languages including Spanish, English, Mixtec, Zapotec, and Nahuatl, and has become an internationally recognized ambassador of Mexican indigenous culture. She won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Folk Album in 2005 for her album "La Cantina."
