Leo Tolstoy Leo Tolstoy was a Russian writer widely regarded as one of the greatest novelists of all time. His two monumental works—War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877)—are considered to be among the greatest works in the history of literature for their sweeping scope, psychological depth, and moral complexity. In his later years he became a moral philosopher and Christian anarchist, advocating for nonviolence and simple living in works that influenced Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.
