# Kurt Cobain

Kurt Cobain was the singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the Seattle grunge band Nirvana, whose 1991 breakthrough album "Nevermind" and its lead single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" dramatically shifted the course of popular music and brought alternative rock to a mass audience. Cobain's raw songwriting, which drew on punk ethics and melodic hooks, expressed a generation's alienation and helped define the sound and sensibility of 1990s rock. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on April 5, 1994, at age 27, and remains one of rock's most mourned figures.
