Khun Sa Khun Sa was a Shan warlord and drug trafficker who at his peak controlled an estimated half of the world's heroin supply through his army and poppy cultivation operations in the Golden Triangle region of Southeast Asia, spanning parts of Myanmar, Thailand, and Laos. He led the Shan United Army and later the Mong Tai Army, presenting his drug trafficking operations partly as a struggle for Shan autonomy. He surrendered to the Burmese military government in 1996 in exchange for amnesty and was never extradited despite U.S. federal indictments, dying of natural causes in Rangoon in 2007.
