José María Morelos José María Morelos y Pavón was a mestizo Catholic priest and military leader who took command of the Mexican independence movement after Hidalgo's execution. He organized a Congress that drafted the Solemn Act of the Declaration of Independence of Northern America in 1813. He was captured, defrocked, and executed by firing squad in 1815. The state of Morelos is named in his honor.
