José María Morelos José María Morelos y Pavón was a mestizo Catholic priest and military leader who took command of the Mexican independence movement after Hidalgo's execution. He organized a Congress that drafted the Solemn Act of the Declaration of Independence of Northern America in 1813. He was captured, defrocked, and executed by firing squad in 1815.
