The Wolf of Wall Street Jordan Belfort was the founder of Stratton Oakmont, a Long Island broker-dealer firm that defrauded investors of approximately $200 million through stock market manipulation and fraudulent sales practices throughout the 1990s. He pleaded guilty in 1999 to securities fraud and money laundering and cooperated extensively with federal authorities, receiving a sentence of 22 months, of which he served 22 months. His memoir about his criminal career was adapted into a 2013 film directed by Martin Scorsese.
