John McCarthy John McCarthy was an American computer scientist and cognitive scientist who coined the term "artificial intelligence" in 1956 and is recognized as one of the founding fathers of the field. He created the Lisp programming language in 1958—the second-oldest high-level programming language still in widespread use, which became the dominant language for AI research for decades. He organized the 1956 Dartmouth Conference that launched AI as a field, developed the concept of time-sharing computing, and received the Turing Award in 1971.
