John Lennon was a British musician, singer, and songwriter who co-founded The Beatles and, alongside Paul McCartney, wrote some of the most celebrated songs in the history of popular music. Following the band's dissolution, his solo career produced iconic works including "Imagine" (1971), which became an anthem for the peace movement, and "Working Class Hero." He was shot and killed outside his New York City apartment building, the Dakota, on December 8, 1980, by Mark David Chapman, at the age of 40.
