# John Dillinger

John Dillinger was an American bank robber who led a gang responsible for robbing 24 banks and four police stations across the Midwest during the Depression era, becoming a major FBI target and one of the most publicized criminals of the 1930s. He escaped from jail twice, including a notable escape from what was considered an escape-proof Indiana jail in 1934 using a wooden pistol carved to look real. He was shot and killed by FBI agents outside the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934, after being identified by a woman who had tipped off authorities.
