Joe Colombo Joe Colombo was the boss of the Colombo crime family in Brooklyn, one of the five New York City Mafia families, and founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League in 1970 in an unusual move that brought him significant public visibility while publicly denying the existence of the Mafia. He was shot in the head at a League rally in Columbus Circle, New York, in June 1971 and spent the remaining seven years of his life in a coma-like vegetative state, dying in May 1978.
