Joe Colombo Joe Colombo was the boss of the Colombo crime family in Brooklyn, one of the five New York City Mafia families, and founded the Italian-American Civil Rights League in 1970 in an unusual move that brought him significant public visibility while publicly denying the existence of the Mafia.
