Jimi Hendrix Jimi Hendrix was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter widely considered the greatest electric guitarist in the history of rock music, whose explosive and innovative playing style redefined what the instrument could do. His performances at the Monterey Pop Festival (1967) and Woodstock (1969) are among the most celebrated in rock history, and his recordings with the Jimi Hendrix Experience—including "Purple Haze," "Voodoo Child," and "All Along the Watchtower"—remain touchstones of the 1960s counterculture. He died on September 18, 1970, of asphyxiation related to barbiturate intoxication, at age 27.
