Jean-Paul Sartre

Jean-Paul Sartre French philosopher, playwright, and novelist who was the leading figure of existentialism — the philosophical movement centered on individual freedom and responsibility. His works "Being and Nothingness," "No Exit," and "Nausea" are foundational texts of 20th-century philosophy. He famously declined the 1964 Nobel Prize in Literature, saying a writer should not allow himself to be turned into an institution.
