James Cameron James Cameron is the most commercially successful filmmaker in history, the director of three of the highest-grossing films ever made — 'Titanic' (1997), 'Avatar' (2009), and 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (2022), the last two of which became the first and third films to gross over $2 billion worldwide. Born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, he moved to California as a young man and worked as a truck driver before getting his start in the film industry, making his breakthrough with 'The Terminator' (1984). He won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Picture for 'Titanic' and is also a record-setting deep-sea explorer, having solo-dived to the deepest point in the ocean — the Mariana Trench — in 2012.
