Ingmar Bergman Ingmar Bergman is the most acclaimed director in the history of European art cinema, a visionary filmmaker whose explorations of faith, death, loneliness, and human suffering gave the medium its deepest philosophical weight. Born in Uppsala, Sweden, the son of a strict Lutheran pastor, he channeled his severe upbringing into a lifelong artistic confrontation with existential questions, producing landmark works including 'The Seventh Seal' (1957), 'Wild Strawberries' (1957), 'Persona' (1966), and 'Scenes from a Marriage' (1973). He won the Palme d'Or at Cannes twice and received honorary Oscars, and his influence on filmmakers worldwide — from Woody Allen to Michael Haneke — is immeasurable.
