# Ignacio Zaragoza

Ignacio Zaragoza was a Mexican general who led the Mexican army to victory over the French Imperial forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 — the origin of Cinco de Mayo. Though France eventually conquered Mexico, the battle boosted national morale. Zaragoza died of typhoid fever just four months after his famous victory, aged 33.
