Born in New York City to an affluent family, he became a major star after his breakout role in 'High Sierra' (1941), going on to iconic performances in 'Casablanca' (1942), 'The Maltese Falcon' (1941), and 'The African Queen' (1951), which earned him his only Academy Award.
