Halle Berry Halle Berry made history at the 2002 Academy Awards by becoming the first — and to date only — Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress, for her performance in 'Monster's Ball' (2001). Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she began her career as a model before transitioning to television and film, achieving mainstream stardom as Storm in the 'X-Men' franchise and as a Bond girl in 'Die Another Day' (2002). In later years she has expanded into directing with 'Bruised' (2020) and has been vocal about increasing opportunities for women of color in Hollywood.
