Günter Grass German novelist and sculptor whose debut novel "The Tin Drum" (1959) — narrated by a boy who refuses to grow up — became one of the defining works of post-WWII German literature and was adapted into an Oscar-winning film. Nobel Prize in Literature 1999. His 2006 revelation that he had served briefly in the Waffen-SS as a teenager caused significant controversy.
