Freddie Mercury Freddie Mercury was the lead vocalist and primary songwriter of the British rock band Queen, universally celebrated as one of the greatest singers in rock history for his extraordinary four-octave vocal range and electrifying stage presence. Born Farrokh Bulsara in Zanzibar to Parsi Indian parents, he co-wrote some of the most enduring rock anthems ever recorded, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "We Will Rock You," and "Somebody to Love." He died of bronchopneumonia resulting from AIDS on November 24, 1991, one day after publicly acknowledging his illness.
