Franz Beckenbauer Franz Beckenbauer is widely regarded as the greatest defender in football history and one of only two men to have won the FIFA World Cup as both captain and manager. Known as "Der Kaiser," he revolutionized the libero (sweeper) role, playing it as an attacking position. He won the European Cup three consecutive times with Bayern Munich and led West Germany to the 1974 World Cup title, later managing the team to victory at Italia 90 as well.
