Superfly Frank Lucas was a Harlem-based drug lord who built a highly profitable heroin trafficking operation in the late 1960s and early 1970s by cutting out middlemen and sourcing directly from Southeast Asia, reportedly using connections developed during the Vietnam War era. He was arrested in 1975 and convicted of drug trafficking offenses, receiving a sentence later reduced to five years after he cooperated with federal authorities. His life and criminal career were the basis for the 2007 film "American Gangster."
