The Prime Minister Frank Costello was a powerful New York Mafia boss who led the Genovese crime family and became known as the "Prime Minister of the Underworld" for his preference for political corruption and diplomacy over violence as instruments of power, cultivating relationships with politicians, judges, and police across New York City. He survived an assassination attempt ordered by Vito Genovese in 1957 and subsequently stepped down as family boss, though he retained significant influence. He was convicted of tax evasion in 1954 and served time in prison; he died of a heart attack in New York in February 1973.
