Francis Bacon Francis Bacon was an English philosopher, statesman, and essayist who is credited with developing and popularizing the inductive scientific method — systematic observation, experiment, and inference from evidence — in works including The Advancement of Learning (1605) and Novum Organum (1620). His critique of scholastic deductive reasoning and his vision of science as a collective, cumulative, and practically beneficial enterprise helped launch the Scientific Revolution. As Lord Chancellor under James I, he was also one of the most powerful legal and political figures of his era.
