Federico Fellini Federico Fellini was the defining genius of Italian art cinema, a director of boundless imagination whose dreamlike, autobiographical films transformed the possibilities of the medium and gave cinema a new language of memory, desire, and fantasy. Born in Rimini, he began as a caricaturist and radio writer before breaking into film, winning four Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film — for 'La Strada' (1954), 'Nights of Cabiria' (1957), '8½' (1963), and 'Amarcord' (1973). His name has entered the language as an adjective: "Felliniesque" denotes a surreal, carnivalesque excess that only he could fully conjure on screen.
