Elizabeth Taylor Dame Elizabeth Taylor was the most glamorous and magnetic star of Hollywood's Golden Age, a child actress who grew into the world's most famous woman, winning two Academy Awards for 'BUtterfield 8' (1960) and 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' (1966). Born in London to American parents, she was evacuated to Los Angeles at the start of World War II, where her mother enrolled her in auditions that led to her film debut at age 10. In later life she became one of the earliest and most prominent celebrity advocates for HIV/AIDS research and treatment, co-founding amfAR in 1985.
