Elizabeth Holmes Elizabeth Holmes founded Theranos in 2003 and promoted its blood-testing technology as revolutionary, claiming it could conduct hundreds of medical tests from a single finger-prick blood sample, a claim that proved to be false and potentially endangered patients who acted on inaccurate results. She raised approximately $700 million from investors and was once celebrated as a Silicon Valley visionary before a 2015 Wall Street Journal investigation exposed serious concerns about the technology's reliability. She was convicted in January 2022 of four counts of criminal fraud against investors and sentenced to approximately 11 years in federal prison, beginning her sentence in 2023.
