Elena Poniatowska Elena Poniatowska is Mexico's most prominent journalist and author, celebrated for her testimonial chronicles of ordinary Mexicans and social upheaval. Her eyewitness account of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre, La noche de Tlatelolco (1971), stands as a foundational document of Mexican civic memory. In 2013 she became the first Mexican woman to win the Cervantes Prize, the Spanish-speaking world's highest literary honor.
