La Barbie Edgar Valdez Villarreal, an American-born trafficker from Laredo, Texas, rose to become a senior enforcer and commander within the Beltrán Leyva Cartel and later the Gulf Cartel, overseeing drug shipments and directing violent enforcement operations in Mexico. He was arrested by Mexican federal police in August 2010 in the State of Mexico and subsequently extradited to the United States, where he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and was sentenced to 49 years in federal prison. His case was notable as a rare instance of a U.S.-born citizen attaining a senior leadership position within a major Mexican cartel.
