Dennis Ritchie Dennis Ritchie was an American computer scientist who created the C programming language in 1972 and co-created the Unix operating system with Ken Thompson at Bell Labs — two foundational inventions that underpin nearly all modern computing. C became the basis for countless subsequent languages including C++, Java, JavaScript, Python, Go, and Rust, and Unix's design philosophy directly influenced Linux, macOS, and virtually every modern operating system. He received the Turing Award in 1983 alongside Ken Thompson; his influence on technology rivals that of any engineer in history.
